    Chapter Index

    The next morning.

Brother Sheng leaned against the window and stayed awake all night.

he looked at the sky in front of him, from the deep darkness of the night to the morning light, slowly pushing away inch by inch. The sun had not yet fully risen, and the skyline among the distant mountains was only dyed with a faint layer of gold.

He’s eyes were bloodshot, and he watched tiredly as the light climbed up the mountain and reflected on the treetops. The sunlight gently dyed the whole world bright, but his chest felt horribly empty, as if something had been quietly taken away.

he closed his eyes and took a deep breath.

But the oppressive pain could not be dissipated with breathing.

He walked to the bathroom, washed his face, looked at himself in the mirror, and tried to smile for a long time.

It wasn’t until that smile became more natural that he slowly went downstairs.

    downstairs.

There was a damp chill in the air, as if the entire morning was shrouded in a layer of silent sadness.

Shu Qi slowly opened her eyes, the swelling after crying was still there in the corners of her eyes, her throat was dry, and her chest was heavy; she felt that she had never really fallen asleep, but was just struggling silently between darkness and morning light.

As soon as it got dark, she got up, walked into the bathroom, washed her face, and tried her best to wash away the redness and swelling in her eyes and the chaos in her heart.

He walked back to the room, sat in front of the dressing table, stared blankly at his pale self in the mirror, and tried to force out a normal smile.

She tried for a long time.

The person in the mirror still smiled stiffly, his pale face reflected the faint golden light outside the window, and even the traces of tears seemed to be ruthlessly exposed by the sun.

She heard the sound of people coming downstairs outside the door. She closed her eyes and stayed quietly for a while.

Then take a deep breath and suppress all the emotions in your heart.

Open the door and walk downstairs.

There was slight movement from the kitchen.

    It’s Brother Sheng.

he looks haggard and calm, but his movements are still as usual——

Boiling water and preparing breakfast, every detail was taken care of as if what happened last night had never happened.

A warm and rich aroma suddenly filled the air, with a slightly bitter and warm breath.

That is the charming taste of coffee.

Shu Qi looked at He’s back for a while, feeling warm and painful in her heart. It wasn’t until the aroma of coffee started to rise that she pretended to be calm and walked in.

    He said softly: “Good morning.”

Brother Sheng turned around when he heard the sound.

The two people’s eyes briefly intertwined in the air, but they avoided it at the same time as if they were stung.

Brother Sheng’s throat moved, his voice was slightly hoarse, and he whispered: “…You didn’t sleep, okay? Eat something, maybe you will feel better.”

Shu Qi was stunned for a moment. That plain concern was like a ray of light, gently touching the softest part of her chest; an indescribable warmth slowly emerged, but was tightly suppressed by a deeper layer of sorrow.

She quickly lowered her head, fearing that when she looked up and saw Brother Sheng’s gentle eyes, the surging emotions would overflow from her eyes.

He had no choice but to curl his lips and respond calmly: “Well, thank you…I’m fine, I’m fine.”

After saying that, she walked quickly to the bar, but her back was quietly tense, as if she was afraid that she would collapse if she was not careful.

Breakfast is very simple, a soft-boiled egg sprinkled with sea salt and black pepper, and a strip of bacon fried to a crisp.

Shu Qi stared blankly at the steaming breakfast, not knowing where her mind was wandering.

Brother Sheng glanced at Shu Qi. Shu Qi seemed to feel the gaze and subconsciously raised her head. Their eyes collided again and they avoided each other slightly.

    “…Do you want more milk?”

    “Yeah.”

Brother Sheng placed two cups of warm latte on the table and pushed one cup in front of Shu Qi.

As usual, he sat down opposite, obviously very close, but seemed to be separated by a layer of air that no one could easily cross.

Shu Qi held the coffee cup with both hands, feeling the slightly hot temperature penetrate her palms, and her heart felt warmer. The aroma of coffee lingered on the tip of her nose, making her feel a little dazed for a moment.

After taking a sip of the slightly bitter and warm coffee, the warmth quickly turned into a burst of sadness before she could support her broken emotions.

The heat of the food rose quietly from the edge of the plate and blended with the aroma of coffee in the air, like some invisible tenderness that quietly surrounded the two of them.

    “Eat.”

    “Yeah.”

The sunshine outside the window has slowly climbed up to the entire sky, gentle but pale.

The two of them ate breakfast quietly, as if nothing had changed and yet everything was different.

Shu Qi looked at the empty plate in front of her, took a breath, smiled nonchalantly, as if nothing had happened, raised her head and asked, “Dad, do you have any plans for today?”

Brother Sheng was silent for a moment, as if he was thinking about how to answer. After a while, he’s voice was low and gentle.

“…Wherever you want to go, I’ll accompany you.”

This sentence was as light as a feather, but it fell heavily into Shu Qi’s heart. Her heart trembled, and the emotions she had just managed to sort out were broken into silent rain and fell into her heart.

Shu Qi lowered her head, lowered her eyelashes, and said nothing.

Brother Sheng stood up silently and put away the cups and plates. Shu Qi looked at He and whispered, “You cooked it.”

Brother Sheng’s hand stopped for a moment.

“Okay.” The voice was low and gentle, as if he already knew she would say that.

Shu Qi stood up and took the plate, “…behave yourself.” She added in a low voice, barely audible.

The sound of water in the sink sounded. The two of them were back to back, neither of them spoke. Only the sunlight outside the window fell on the ground through the glass, motionless.

There were not many cups and plates, and the sound of water in the sink soon stopped.

Shu Qi put the dishes to dry and wiped her hands very gently, as if she was afraid of disturbing something.

She didn’t speak, didn’t look at Brother Sheng, and walked past he as usual, heading towards the living room.

Brother Sheng looked up and saw her fleeting glance as she passed by. Under the slanting sunlight, he found that the corners of her eyes were still red, like the traces of tears from crying for too long last night that didn’t have time to fade away.

he’s heart tightened, and his throat seemed to be squeezed by something.

“Shu Qi.” The voice was low, although it was a little urgent, it was steady.

Shu Qi paused and did not look back immediately.

Brother Sheng’s tone was calm and gentle: “The wind by the river should be very comfortable… Do you want to go for a walk together?”

At this time, the sun shone down from behind her and fell on her shoulders, seeming to give the slightly frozen back a layer of soft silence.

She was silent for a few seconds, then turned around slightly and nodded.

    “I…I’m going to change clothes.”

The stiffness in the corners of his eyes seemed to have been quietly melted by the sunlight.
