    Chapter Index

Entering the location into the mobile phone navigation, Xue Xue walked in according to the address Yu Enfei told him.

I passed a grocery store on the way and felt a little thirsty so I wanted to buy something to drink.

    “Is anyone here?”

The light was dim as only a single lightbulb embedded in the center of the room was on.

Three rows of old shelves are filled with a dazzling array of merchandise. The two narrow aisles can barely accommodate one adult. To the right of the door is a wooden table covered with mottled traces of time, with a cash register on it.

It feels like no one is looking after the store.

Thinking about it, she turned to leave, but she didn’t expect to hear a familiar male voice.

    “Do you need anything?”

    Xue Xue stopped.

“I’m sorry, just now…” Chen Ye, who came out holding a stack of thick cardboard, raised his eyes and met Xue Xue’s eyes.”You…why are you here?”

“So you haven’t been to school these days because you’re helping someone else take care of the store?”

    “Yeah.”

Xue Xue thought about many reasons why Chen Ye didn’t come to school, but he didn’t expect this reason, and he didn’t know how to react.

“Then how long will you be helping?”

“Next week, Grandpa Hu will be discharged from the hospital next week.”

    “…Okay.”

Xue Xue tore open the outer packaging of the straw and inserted it into the milk.

The fan was running loudly, and the metal bracket seemed unable to provide stable support. The fan blades made a creaking noise as the fan blades rotated, making people wonder if it would stop running in the next second.

She sat on the stool, looked around her surroundings, and then returned her eyes to Chen Ye.

“When will the store be open?”

    “Nine o’clock in the evening.”

“So you close the door at nine o’clock in the evening and go home?”

    “Yeah.”

Whatever Xue Xue asked, Chen Ye would answer.

His attitude was very cooperative, but for some reason it made Xue Xue feel a pain in his head.

“Do you think running a store is more important than going to school?” After a brief silence, Xue Xue still couldn’t hold it back and questioned: “And this store is not even owned by your family, so you didn’t go to school just to run the store for the hospitalized boss?”

    She couldn’t understand.

The tone sounded a bit harsh.

Under Chen Ye’s gaze, Xue Xue quickly realized something was wrong.

I may have brought over the habits I developed in my previous life.

    “I’m sorry, I…”

“Grandpa Hu is just like my family and grandma’s family.”

Hearing what Chen Ye said suddenly, Xue Xue was stunned.

The boy lowered his eyelids, his thin eyelids and long eyelashes, like the trembling wings of a butterfly about to take off.

Xue Xue realized later that Chen Ye was explaining to himself.

Although it’s almost the same as no explanation.

    “Your grandma…”

    “Grandma, she’s gone.”

Stopping talking, Xue Xue shut her mouth.

Now she really didn’t know what to do.

“It’s okay, you don’t have to feel sorry.” Noticing Xue Xue’s confusion, Chen Ye raised his eyes. His dark eyes were like black chess pieces contained in white jade.“Birth, old age, illness and death are all human nature.”

Such words came from a boy who was less than eighteen years old, but there was no sense of violation at all.

Xue Xue thought for a while, and it probably had something to do with Chen Ye’s calmness that was not in line with his peers.

Ironically, this composure was polished by an unfriendly environment.

Facing Chen Ye like this, she found that she was not qualified and should not take it for granted and give him guidance from above in the name of doing his best.

Xue Xue thought as he bent down and opened the schoolbag that was originally placed at his feet.

Then, she took out a folder and handed it to Chen Ye.

    “This is it?”

Chen Ye took it with a confused look on his face.

“The lecture notes and test papers distributed in class these days have been divided by subject and date.” Xue Xue buckled the buckle of her school bag.”I don’t know if you need it, but I thought I would come to you anyway, so I sorted it out.”

An ordinary sentence made Chen Ye’s hands tremble inexplicably.

This was only the outward part. Deep in the young man’s heart, there was a stranger and more uneasy emotion surging.

    Impulse is a momentary thing.

He opened his mouth to speak, but Xue Xue stood up at this moment.

“It’s time for me to go.”

The sound that is about to come out is like a bubble that suddenly bursts and disappears.

    Xue Xue waved to him.

    “Bye.”

Xue Xue is not a very superstitious person, but on the way home, she felt that her eyelids kept twitching.

As the saying goes: A twitch from the left eye brings wealth, and a twitch from the right eye brings disaster.

After seeing the extra coupe in the garage, she knew that today would not end so simply.

“Oh, my sister is finally willing to go home.”

As soon as he saw Xue Xue coming back, Zhao Hean started to get angry.

Xue Xue pretended not to see or hear, and walked to the stairs alone.

The ignored man’s face immediately darkened.

As she passed the sofa, Zhao Hean grabbed her wrist without warning.

Slender frame, white and greasy skin.

The man even scratched it vaguely with his fingertips.

This frivolous and suggestive move made Xue Xue’s anger rise directly.

    “Zhao He’an!”

“He can still talk.” He raised his eyebrows and smiled.”I thought my sister became mute at some point.”
